What ignited your passion for flying?
As a child, both my parents and several of their friends flew gliders, hearing their stories inspired my dream for flying which was cemented when I got to visit the flight deck of an airliner. It was an SAA flight to Mauritius and the first time that I had ever been on an aeroplane. I can still remember the sight and the experience to this day. I have since gone on to make the sky my home by involving myself in skydiving, gliding and commercially as a career.
How many flying hours do you have?
+/- 520 hours. (Excluding Gliders)
How many aircraft are you rated on?
7… and several glider variants.
What is your favourite aircraft to fly and why?
My favourite aircraft to fly is the Mooney M20J, it is a fast and fun aircraft that gets you to your destination quickly. I also thoroughly enjoy the Diamond DV20 as it’s best described as a powered aircraft wanting to be a glider. They have sleek lines, are nimble, quick and glide well and make for forgiving trainers.
The perfect student would be:
Somebody who has known since an early age that they’ve wanted to fly in some form or other, who’s spent their childhood staring out of the window at school realising that they belong up in the air and that they won’t be happy until they get there. The ideal student is somebody who realises that aviation is not what you see on Instagram, its all about hard work, focus and being present in what you do.
In my spare time I enjoy:
I enjoy sailing my own yacht around the bay and racing with an established sailing team. Otherwise, I can be found spending time with my family, out cycling, photography or exploring Cape Town and it’s surrounds.
